Empowering the 100% Kona Coffee Community

United by a mission to elevate Kona's coffee legacy, we at Greenwell Farms stand alongside hundreds of small local farmers, fostering a collaborative spirit that strengthens our community. Our commitment extends beyond our fields: through active participation in industry associations, enriching "talk story" sessions, and innovative research initiatives with the University of Hawaii, the Hawaii Agricultural Research Center, and others, we help ensure that the quality of Kona coffee rises as its global demand flourishes. Together, we cultivate excellence and protect the trust placed in the Kona name, nurturing a collective success rooted in the well-being of our land and people.

Voices of the Land

Nestled in the heart of Kona, the voices of our farmers rise above the verdant slopes, sharing tales of the land, the crops, and the community that binds us. In our “Coffee Talk Stories” sessions with our farmers, we gather the wisdom, experiences, and dreams of those who tend to the coffee cherries with love and labor. Greenwell Farms is dedicated to supporting the quality of Kona coffee by working closely with fellow farmers, guiding them on combating various coffee plant diseases and pests like CLR and CBB. Through the Kona Coffee Farmers Association, Greenwell hosts various seminars to educate and empower farmers. These narratives are not just stories; they are the living threads of Greenwell Farms’ fabric, each one weaving the larger tale of dedication, perseverance, and collective triumph. Join us at Greenwell Farms for these heartfelt sessions, and become part of the ongoing story that is Kona's coffee legacy—a legacy steeped in each cup we proudly share with the world.

Pioneering Progress with Science
and Nature

At Greenwell Farms, our collaboration with the University of Hawaii and our contributions to NOAA's rainfall studies exemplify our dedication to agricultural innovation and environmental stewardship. Our partnership with leading researchers paves the way for groundbreaking methods in pest management, sustainability, and the development of coffee varieties that promise resilience and flavor. As we meticulously track rainfall patterns with NOAA, we gain insights that not only foster our understanding of the local ecosystem but also enhance our farming practices. This synergy of research and nature ensures that every drop of rain and every grain of knowledge enriches the coffee we cultivate, securing a robust future for the Kona coffee heritage.

The Kona Queen Bee Partnership

In the serene uplands of Kona, Greenwell Farms blooms in alliance with the Kona Queen Bee Company, an emblem of our commitment to ecological diversity and the prosperity of pollinators. By hosting the queen bee nurseries, we foster a vital exchange—bees nourish our crops, and in return, our lands offer them sanctuary. These tiny architects of nature are essential to the health of our ecosystem, spreading life with every blossom they visit. Their thriving presence on our farm is a testament to our practices that honor and protect the environment. The Kona Queen Bee collaboration symbolizes a shared mission to nurture and sustain the vibrant cycle of growth that is intrinsic to the quality of our coffee and the health of our planet.

Non-Profit Impact: Empowering Farmers and Celebrating Kona Coffee Traditions

The Greenwell Family has deep roots in the Kona community dating all the way back to 1850 and in 1976, Tom’s mother was one of the founding members of The Kona Historical Society to preserve and celebrate the rich heritage of Kona and its rich heritage in Hawai’i.  The Greenwell Family took a leadership role in founding the Kona Coffee Council in the early 1980’s.

Leading Change: Advocating for Authentic Kona Coffee Excellence

Tom Greenwell, as the president of the Hawaii Coffee Association and a board member of the Kona Coffee Council, exemplifies Greenwell Farms’ commitment to the Kona Coffee community. We proudly support initiatives that uphold the integrity and quality of Kona coffee, including the recent historic coffee labeling bill.

In July 2024, we were thrilled to witness a historic moment for Hawaii’s coffee industry. Tom Greenwell proudly attended the signing of the new coffee labeling bill (HB 2298) in Honolulu, a major step forward for local farmers. This bill addresses deceptive labeling practices of Hawaiʻi-grown coffee, mandating clear labeling requirements and prohibiting the use of geographic origin names like “Kona” on coffee products unless they contain at least 51% coffee by weight from that origin. The introduction of this bill protects the integrity and legacy of our world-renowned coffee.

Greenwell Farms has sincere gratitude to all of the legislators, lawmakers, farmers and organizations who came together in this journey to secure a bright future for Hawaii’s coffee heritage. These things just don’t happen without everyone’s involvement.

Innovation Meets Tradition

Greenwell Farms has been growing coffee from trees that Tom's grandmother planted over 100 years ago, with the beloved Onouli roast originating from these historic trees. While recently we curtailed production Onouli this year to renovate this farm, we proudly continue to produce exceptional roasts from these trees. Recent plantings at the Konawaena Farm and the high elevation Kopiko Farm have added to long time favorites Private Reserve and our traditional Typica roasts. New varieties such as GESHA and Red Bourbon had provided a variety of distinctive coffee experiences.
